Whenever I’m feeling low, I like to stick on a good YouTube series and, mood dependent, either lie in bed and watch it or have it on in the background whilst I try and tackle some of my to-do list.
The following series are all game-based as I find it easier to lose myself when I’m watching shows based on games.
JackSepticEye is an Irish YouTuber who has been uploading mostly gaming videos since 2012.
Today he has 23 million subscribers and still mostly focuses on gaming videos whilst uploading the odd mental health-inspired video too.
I discovered Jack through watching PewDiePie’s videos as I noticed they had collaborated a few times together.
After watching a few of his videos I knew he would be someone I continued watching for many years to come.
Undertale is a role-playing game based around a child who has fallen into a place called The Underground, an area hidden underneath the Earth and separated by a magic barrier.
The aim is to find your way back to the surface, along the way meeting many characters, trials and tribulations.
I first discovered Undertale through JackSepticEye and was hooked from the first episode.
I loved how crazy the game was yet how captivating the story was.
I really enjoyed how Jack managed to come up with a voice for each character within the game, and still to this day whenever I see the characters I imagine the voice he gave them.
Kindergarten is an abstract puzzle game consisting of many different characters and many different ways to complete the task at hand.
The school, the pupils and the teachers are not what they seem, and you have to complete the quests given whilst navigating the strange world of Kindergarten.
I again discovered this series through Jack and loved how insane it was!
It was very funny, the characters are amazing and Jack’s voice acting is impeccable yet again.
The sequel to the previous offering, this is just as insane, just as funny and just as re-watchable.
The same characters you fell in love with in the previous game are around in this one too, making it very easy to jump back into this world.
LIFE IS STRANGE
Life is Strange is an episodic graphic adventure where you play as Max Caulfield, an 18-year-old photography student who finds herself being able to rewind time.
This game is strongly inspired by the butterfly effect, a theory which suggests that one small change can alter the future drastically.
However, this game also deals with manipulating time too, which can result in some very shocking events occurring.
I discovered this game through YouTube in general as it was all over my main feed.
During my first watch of this series I was playing the game alongside it, finishing whichever episode I was on and then heading over to Jack’s channel to see how his play-through of the episode went.
You’ll experience a lot of emotions throughout this series, so buckle up and enjoy!
Paper’s Please is a puzzle simulation game where you play as a border-crossing immigration officer.
Your aim is to check everyone’s documents and make sure that they are okay to go through the border.
This may not sound so fun, but Paper’s Please is filled with a cast of incredible characters and a storyline filled with twists and turns.
This was another game I discovered through JackSepticEye and once I watched the first episode, I was hooked.
PREPARE TO TRY
Prepare to Try began on IGN with Daniel Krupa, Rory Powers and Gavin Murphy.
Their aim was to make Rory, someone who had never played Dark Souls 1, complete it before Dark Souls 3 came out.
Little did they know that viewers would grow to absolutely love them and want more than just the one series.
I discovered Prepare to Try through my boyfriend as he had watched a few of their videos and knew I would love them too.
DARK SOULS 1
Dark Souls 1 is well known for being an incredibly hard and unforgiving game, one that will take many pain-staking attempts to complete.
The story is quite convoluted, but to keep it short, you play a cursed undead character who begins a pilgrimage to discover the fate of the world.
This series was brilliant to watch because not only is the game great to watch because of its challenges and deep story, but you got to watch Daniel, Rory and Gavin begin the journey of their friendship.
DARK SOULS 3
Dark Souls 3 is a direct sequel to Dark Souls 1 (as apposed to Dark Souls 2, which followed a different story in the same universe), and is set hundreds of years into the future.
I don’t want to go into depth about the plot of this one as I don’t want to potentially spoil anything, but this one is possibly more challenging and more frustrating, yet a lot more enjoyable than the first rendition.
Again the guys make this incredibly fun to watch as they work well with one another, comically bouncing off each other and producing one-liners you’ll never forget.
Bloodborne is a game set in a Victorian-era city of Yharnam, a place whose inhabitants have been infected with an abnormal blood-borne disease.
You play as a Hunter attempting to find the source of the plague whilst unravelling the mysteries the city has to offer.
This game is heavily inspired by H P. Lovecraft and makes for a creepy yet challenging experience.
Again the guys at Prepare to Try make this an incredibly fun watch and somehow make you feel like you’re in the room with them.
Cuphead is a run and gun released in 2017 and is heavily inspired by the rubber hose style of animation used in cartoons of the 1930’s.
Everything in this game was completely hand-animated, which gives it a welcome charm to the immense challenges it brings.
Watching the Prepare to Try guys deal with these challenges was incredibly entertaining and I’ve found myself rewatching this series a few times.
CinnamonToastKen is a gaming YouTuber who started his channel back in 2011.
A lot of his game choices are different from many other YouTubers, seeming to focus more on Japanese and Korean games.
I discovered Ken through PewDiePie as the two of them have regularly collaborated together.
DANGANRONPA: TRIGGER HAPPY HAVOC
Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc is a visual novel adventure game set inside an elite high school.
Every student that attends is classed as an “ultimate student”, someone who is the world’s best at whatever their chosen subject is.
However, the game quickly turns into a highly intensive murder mystery that asks you to figure out who is the killer, and if you get it wrong, you will be killed instead!
This game is filled with fun, twists and just overall craziness, but watching Ken play it is highly entertaining and I found myself gripped from episode 1.
DANGANRONPA 2: GOODBYE DESPAIR
Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair follows a similar story to the previous rendition but is this time set on a tropical island.
I can’t mention much about the plot without spoiling it, but again you get to meet a huge bunch of characters and experience an even crazier plot.
Ken does a great job of making this series highly entertaining.
After leaving IGN and having to give up Prepare to Try, Rory Powers, Daniel Krupa and Gavin Murphy created their own company, RKG (Rory, Krupa, Gav).
Starting off in Gav’s spare bedroom, the boys managed to gather together a ton of financial support via their Patreon page, enabling them to do this full-time and have their own recording studio.
DARK SOULS 2
Dark Souls 2 has no direct story connection with Dark Souls 1 or 3, despite being set in the same universe.
In this game you are a human who has become Undead, cursed to never die and eventually become a Hollow, a zombie-like being with no memories or purpose.
The aim of this game is to seek out the King, Vendrick, to usurp his throne and link the flame to keep the world from turning to darkness.
Watching the boys return to this universe makes for a great experience and you’re bound to have a ton of laughs throughout.
Until Dawn is a drama survival game also heavily inspired by the butterfly effect.
In this game you control multiple characters and have to make an array of choices, some of which may result in their deaths.
This game became a huge hit on YouTube as everyone’s series were so different as different characters survived or died in a variety of ways.
I was so happy when the RKG guys decided to play this game as I loved it so much after watching PewDiePie, JackSepticEye and Markiplier play it.
I also played it myself and earned the Platinum trophy for it.
This particular series was incredibly funny and I know I will rewatch it many times in the future.
RESIDENT EVIL 2
This rendition of Resident Evil 2 is a complete remake, which released in 2019.
I was a little too young to remember the original game, so it was great to experience it with the incredible graphics it has today.
In this series you’ll meet a great bunch of characters, including one that the guys lovingly name “Wormy”.
It’s a fantastic series and you’ll be equally laughing and hiding behind your cushion through fear.
PewDiePie is the most subscribed individual on YouTube, having 103 million subscribers as of writing this post.
I first discovered PewDiePie back in around 2014 when I heard his name mentioned many times, so I decided to watch a few of his videos to see why he was so popular.
I fell in love with some of his earlier series as I had never watched someone playing games before and I absolutely loved it!
At that time of my life I was working a lot on my art and I was spending many days at a time alone in my house, so having one of his series on in the background felt comforting.
Catherine is a puzzle-based game that follows Vincent Brooks, a man who is torn between his girlfriend and a woman of the same name, which he met in a diner.
During his inner struggle he is beset with supernatural nightmares, which need him to fight his way through puzzles filled with monsters.
I discovered this game through PewDiePie and I loved how crazy it was and how weirdly captivating the story was.
If you need a fun series to watch, this may be the one for you.
DOKI DOKI LITERATURE CLUB
Doki Doki Literature Club is an American visual novel game set in a high school.
You play a male high school student who joins the school’s literature club, which includes you and four female students.
Throughout the game you can get to know the characters in a variety of ways, however, all is not how it seems.
I remember watching this for the first time and not really understanding why Felix (PewDiePie) was playing it, it seemed like he was doing a lot of reading and nothing was really happening in the game.
The game quickly turned into something completely different and something you’ll find hard not to be hooked on!
Mad Father is a survival horror role-playing puzzle game that contains some seriously dark and spooky moments.
The game centres around an 11-year-old girl who breaks into her father’s secret laboratory and discovers a horrifying truth.
I don’t want to discuss the plot too much as there are many twists within it, but trust me when I say it’s incredibly gripping and horrifying!
Corpse Party is a survival horror adventure game set inside a Japanese high school.
After celebrating their school’s culture festival, the group of high schoolers decide to tell ghost stories and perform a ritual, which will help them feel closer to one another after leaving school for good.
However, all is not what it seems and the group are transported through an alternate dimension and into a dilapidated version of their school.
I won’t go into the story as there are too many potential spoilers, but this game contains some incredible characters and amazing storytelling.
Be warned, parts of this are incredibly gory and quite emotionally-packed.
THE WALKING DEAD (SERIES 1)
The Walking Dead is an episodic adventure game developed by Telltale Games.
The game follows the same concept as the TV show but with a new cast of characters.
Again I can’t go too much into the game as it contains many twists and turns and would be very easy to spoil, but let’s just say Felix gets very emotional at the end!
Minecraft is a sandbox game that allows you to create your own story.
The game is procedurally generated, meaning with every new play-through you have a completely new world to discover.
Minecraft was incredibly popular many years ago but quickly faded into the background with games like Fortnite and Overwatch taking over the scene.
On June 21st 2019, PewDiePie shocked his viewers by releasing a Minecraft video, which many expected to be a one-off.
However, viewers enjoyed the characters he had created so much (and probably the fact he was playing games on his channel again) that it ended up becoming over 30 episodes long!
You’re in for a bumpy ride with this series as you will soon learn to not fall too in love with any of the characters, as the world of Minecraft is very harsh and anyone can die at any time.
(Warning: this playlist appears to have been made backwards, which may cause playback to not be consecutive)
Markiplier is an American gaming YouTuber who started his channel in 2012.
He is most famous for playing horror games, such as Five Nights at Freddy’s, SCP Containment Breach and many more from various indie developers.
I first discovered Mark back when Five Nights at Freddy’s was being played by many people across YouTube.
I had heard Mark being named as “The King of Five Nights at Freddy’s” lots of times, so I had to at least watch that series.
I ended up loving how charismatic and funny he was and how entertaining his horror videos were.
FIVE NIGHTS AT FREDDY’S (ALL SERIES)
Five Nights at Freddy’s is a series of games created, designed, developed and published by Scott Cawthon.
The series is centred on a fictional pizza restaurant, Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, where you can eat your food and be entertained by animatronic creatures.
The first few games are based on you being a nighttime security guard who is checking the restaurant and making sure the animatronics are behaving, but as the games go on the locations of them change as the story progresses.
The game contains many jump-scares and will have you on the edge of your seat throughout each episode.
THE WITCH’S HOUSE
The Witch’s House is a puzzle-oriented horror game set in the middle of a forest.
You play as a little girl who wakes up in the forest and discovers her way out is blocked by roses.
Her only option is to enter the mysterious house nearby in hopes of finding a way of escaping.
There’s an array of characters that you may grow attached with a story that is captivating and the horror is quite disturbing.
THE CROOKED MAN
The Crooked Man is a Japanese horror game centred around David Hooper, a man who has just finished moving into his new apartment during a difficult period of his life.
David starts to notice some unusual things happening around him and his apartment and when asking about the former tenant gets him nowhere, he sets on a journey to discover the truth for himself.
This game contains many jump scares and is an overall edge-of-your-seat watch.
Ib is an adventure game with elements of psychological horror thrown in.
You play Ib, a girl who is taken to an art museum by her parents, eventually wandering off on her own to examine it for herself.
Along her journey, the museum loses power and the inhabitants get locked inside.
Ib travels through various paintings on her quest to discover what is going on and how to escape.
This story is incredibly unique and a joy to watch, but don’t underestimate it’s potential to creep you out!
Misao is a horror game made by the same development team who made Mad Father.
Misao was an ordinary high school student, until a few months ago when she stopped showing up to school and she hadn’t been seen at home either.
Rumours spread around the school that Misao was dead, and when a group of students joke about the idea of her haunting the school, an earthquake takes out the lights.
Aki, one of the students, hears a voice pleading for help within the darkness.
Separated from the rest of the group, Aki sets out to discover what truly happened to Misao.
This game is incredibly dark and at times quite unsettling, but you’ll find it hard to stop watching as you want to find out the truth about Misao.
Salty Phish is a gaming YouTuber who has been uploading videos since 2011.
Today he focuses mostly on Overwatch-based videos and is often playing it with a large group of friends.
I first discovered Salty when I was trawling YouTube for videos that would help me to learn how to achieve the Overwatch trophies I was working towards, I quickly fell in love with his comedic charm and how well he and his friends worked together.
Overwatch is a team-based multiplayer game developed by Blizzard, the same team who make World of Warcraft.
As of writing this there are currently 30+ characters to choose from, categorised into tanks, DPS and healers.
I started playing this game at the beginning of 2019 and as someone who loves to obtain as many trophies possible from games, this game became quite the challenge.
Salty Phish creates video montages of him and his friends playing Overwatch together.
Each video will have you laughing and feeling like you are part of the group.
GT Live are the same team who bring you Game Theorists, minus a couple of people.
Power couple Matthew and Stephanie Patrick host live gaming nights on their GT Live channel multiple times a week.
I discovered them through their Game Theorists channel and quickly found that their live shows made for great company whilst I was up late at night drawing.
Now I know I previously mentioned the Five Nights at Freddy’s games, but FNAF World was actually a huge flop on YouTube and despite it being completely remade and available to play for free, nobody really picked it up, apart from GT Live.
Not only did they play it, they set out to 100% complete it, something that absolutely resonates with my style of play.
FNAF World is a somewhat open-world adventure game that guides you through a series of battles and puzzles to reach the end of the game.
However, it wouldn’t be a Scott Cawthon game if there wasn’t many hidden mechanics within the game that allowed for multiple endings.
I absolutely loved this play through and have already watched it multiple times.
If you are a fan of the Five Nights at Freddy’s universe then I’m sure you will appreciate the many Easter eggs this game holds.
(Warning: this playlist contains all of the Five Nights at Freddy’s games that GT Live have done, so unfortunately you have to scroll through the playlist to find the FNAF World videos).
