Her journey with travelling, living abroad and creating her own business..
When I decided to create a blog, one of the first things I knew I wanted was an “Artist of the Month” series where I get to show you some of my favourite artists, friends and inspirations.
As well as showing you these artists, I also wanted to show you how they began their journeys and some of the trials and tribulations that they face.
WHY DID I CHOOSE NELE?
Despite Nele not actually being an artist, she is a dear friend and a huge inspiration to me.
I wanted Nele to be my first “Artist of the Month” as without her, I wouldn’t even have this website today.
She has helped to build everything you see here and has made a little dream of mine become reality.
Alongside building this website, she fills me with inspiration and encourages me constantly to push myself to achieve my dreams and live the life I truly want.
Welcome everyone, to Nele van Hout!
WHAT DO YOU DO?
I’m a travel blogger and work as a freelancer (writing, SEO and website design).
On my blog, I share itineraries, travel guides and stories about my life as a Dutch expat living in the UK.
HOW DID YOU GET INTO BLOGGING?
I started my very first blog back when I was 13.
It was a free blogger website filled with broken English, almost unreadable as a 13-year-old starting to get familiar with her second language.
It’s probably where my love for the English language and writing has come from!
It was a safe space for me to write about whatever I wanted and practice my sentences outside of my English classes.
I loved it!
Lots of people will tell you to “niche down”, but start by writing what you’re passionate about.– Nele Van Hout
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN BLOGGING?
Since I was 13, I’ve had blogging projects spawning all over the Internet.
I don’t even remember how many blogs I’ve started over the years.
On my previous blog (nelevanhout.wordpress.com), I started taking things a bit more seriously.
I was studying at university and wanted to create a portfolio of my writing.
That’s when I finally purchased a domain and started The Navigatio in 2017.
DID YOU STUDY BLOGGING?
I studied English and Creative Writing, which is mainly focused on prose and poetry.
I was never taught anything about blogging, as it’s more PR/Marketing/Journalism related.
Pretty much everything I know about blogging is self-taught and tested with a lot of trial and error.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE POST YOU HAVE MADE?
One of my all-time favourite posts is my Eindhoven Travel Guide.
I grew up near Eindhoven and it’s not very well known to the rest of the world.
I really enjoyed showing people some hidden gems in my home country.
I also love my 2 week Japan itinerary, as it reminds me of the best trip I’ve had so far!
WHO INSPIRES YOU?
Ellie Quinn, Rebecca from Of Roses and Cory from You Could Travel are probably my favourite bloggers and their work continues to inspire me to keep creating the best content possible.
Then there are all the lovely people in my life that support me and believe in me, which is always a huge motivation for me!
WHAT DO YOU HAVE PLANNED FOR THE NEAR FUTURE?
At the moment, I’m working really hard on getting more great content out there and gaining more SEO freelance clients.
I only started doing this full-time a few months ago, so everything is still so fresh!
Hopefully, I can plan some trips soon too!
WHAT ARE YOUR LONG TERM GOALS?
To make a living off just my blog.
I already make a bit of money here and there from my website, but the majority of my income is currently from my freelance work.
Hopefully, once I get onto Mediavine (a platform designed to help publishers earn more money from all of their content), that goal will be a bit closer.
ANY ADVICE FOR OTHER BLOGGERS?
Have fun with it!
If you’re starting out just thinking about the money or “freebies”, you’re not doing it right.
Focus on SEO and Pinterest to gain traffic and don’t waste too much time on other social media platforms.
Lots of people will tell you to “niche down”, but start by writing what you’re passionate about.
You can always figure out your niche later.
