When I decided to create a blog, one of the first things I knew I wanted was an “Artist of the Month” series where I get to show you some of my favourite artists, friends and inspirations.
As well as showing you these artists, I also wanted to show you how they began their journeys and some of the trials and tribulations that they face.
WHY DID I CHOOSE KRYSTAN?
Krystan has been a dear friend of mine for a few years now and has always been a huge source of inspiration for me.
We first met whilst doing an art event at Refuge, in Manchester.
WHAT MEDIUMS DO YOU WORK WITH?
At the minute it’s mostly chalk and charcoal, though I’m going to be experimenting more with oil paints over the next few months!
For photography I work on a Nikon D800.
Keep at it, don’t listen to negative energy and do what you want to do for the reasons you want to do it.– Krystan-Grace Sharpe-Young
HOW DID YOU GET INTO ART/PHOTOGRAPHY?
My dad was an artist so it’s always been in my life, but I started drawing three years ago after a horrible break up, it was the only thing that would clear my mind because I had to focus so much on it.
It’s a real meditation for me.
Photography has just always been something I loved, I asked myself when I was deciding what to do with my life, “what would you miss most if you had to give up everything?”, and for me it was photography.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN MAKING ART/PRACTICING PHOTOGRAPHY?
I’ve been drawing for three years now and photographing since I was 16.. so 9 years.
DID YOU STUDY ART/PHOTOGRAPHY?
I studied photography at Nottingham Trent University but I’ve never studied art.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE ART PIECE AND PHOTOGRAPH YOU HAVE MADE/TAKEN?
My favourite art piece is my side profile of a man.
As for photography, I’m shooting so often that it changes so much!
Each wedding is entirely different and I can’t really compare the photographs.
WHO INSPIRES YOU?
My mum, my dad, both my brother and my sister, Alex (my partner) and all of my friends.
They’re all such strong and forward-thinking people- it’s hard not to feel inspired by them!
WHAT DO YOU HAVE PLANNED FOR THE NEAR FUTURE?
Haha honestly I’m not sure, booking weddings in and I’d love to do an exhibition, but we shall see.
WHAT ARE YOUR LONG-TERM GOALS?
Stability and happiness.
I love working for myself, and as long as I can keep this up and live my own life then that’s all that matters.
ANY ADVICE FOR OTHER ARTISTS/PHOTOGRAPHERS?
Keep at it, don’t listen to negative energy and do what you want to do for the reasons you want to do it.
